"Maintenance-Free" Batteries, Explained: What You Can Skip and What Still Kills Them

“Maintenance-free” is the most common phrase on a battery label and one of the most misread. It does not mean the battery needs no attention. It means one specific chore is gone: you never top up the electrolyte with water.

What changed inside the case

A conventional flooded battery uses lead-antimony plates. Antimony makes the plates rugged, but it also accelerates water loss during charging — which is why older batteries had removable caps and needed distilled water every few months.

A maintenance-free battery swaps antimony for calcium in the plate alloy. Calcium-calcium chemistry gasses far less, so the factory can seal the case: the small amount of vapor produced recombines inside instead of venting away. No caps, no watering, no acid check.

Most batteries sold today — including everything labelled AGM or EFB — are maintenance-free in this sense. The distinction that still matters is flooded versus AGM construction, which changes charging behaviour and price, not whether you own a watering can.

What “sealed” doesn’t protect you from

Three things still kill a maintenance-free battery, and none of them care about the label:

Chronic undercharging. Short trips never return the charge the starter took. A battery living at 80% charge sulfates — the plates grow crystals that permanently reduce capacity. A monthly longer drive, or a $30 maintainer if the car sits, prevents most of it.

Heat. Underhood temperature is the strongest predictor of battery life. The same battery that lasts six years in a cool climate can die in three in a hot one. There’s no user fix beyond parking in shade, but it should shape your expectations — and your warranty choice.

Corroded or loose terminals. Sealed cases still grow terminal corrosion. A white or blue-green crust adds resistance exactly where hundreds of amps need to flow. Clean it with a wire brush and a baking-soda rinse; snug the clamps.

The three checks that replace the watering can

  1. A voltage glance, monthly. Engine off, lights off: 12.6 V is full, 12.4 V is half, 12.0 V is effectively dead. A $10 multimeter is enough.
  2. A load or conductance test, twice a year once the battery passes its third birthday. Any parts store does this free in minutes, and it catches the slow fade before the first no-start morning.
  3. A terminal look-over whenever you’re under the hood for anything else.

When replacement is the right call

Maintenance-free batteries rarely die dramatically. They fade: slower cranking on cold mornings, a dashboard that flickers at idle, a jump start that “fixed it” for a week. At four to five years old with any of those symptoms, test it — and treat a failed load test as the battery telling you the truth early, which is the only favor a battery ever does you.
